CBOCS Annual Report for the Calendar Year 2013

CBOCS has just completed its third year and what a year it was. Thanks to Mayor Wahl and Keith Pardieck for getting CBOCS started in the fall of 2010. Since that time we have grown from an initial 40 volunteers to a current number of 118. They spent over 650 hours doing various oyster related activities in 2013.
Those activities included:

  • Water monitoring every month (water quality remains excellent for growing oysters)

  • Deploying 75,000 oyster spat to the Old Rock Reef in May and September

  • Housing 80,000 oyster spat under the Fishing Creek trail and on members piers in September

  • Spring and Fall Fishing Creek cleanup (truckloads of trash were removed along with tree stake and stream bank repair)

  • Two general meetings

  • Field trip to Horn Point oyster hatchery where 1.2 billion oysters eggs are spawned

  • Activity book “Treasures of Fishing Creek” produced and distributed to all students on field trips as well as CBOCS members and interested environmentalists

  • New CBOCS DNR buoy placed on Old Rock Reef (visible from north shore)

  • Hosted 125 Beach Elementary fifth grade students on a spring field trip

  • Hosted 450 CHESPAX fifth grade students on fall field trips

  • Sponsored a Christmas tree at “Festival of Trees” (180 oyster shells were decorated by Beach Elementary fifth grade students)

  • Oyster spat counters were certified

  • Produced a rolling three month activity calendar

  • Participated with a booth at Bayfest

  • Manned a booth at Haunted Water Park

Some additional exciting activities are planned for 2014.
They include:

  • Hosting additional CHESPAX school field trips

  • Hosting private school field trips

  • Producing a computerized smart board module on tidal marshes

  • Identifying, mapping and labeling all native and invasive plant species on Fishing Creek (botanists needed to lead students in this effort)
