Spring 2012 Oyster Planting Announced (corrected date to June 09, 2012)

Dear CBOCS Members and Friends:

It is time!!  The Chesapeake Beach Oyster Cultivation Society is gearing up to plant our first round of yearling oysters on 09 June 2012, starting at 10 a.m.  (Rain date: 10 June 2012, 2 p.m.)

The yearling oysters that were spat just a few months ago will be released in a designated oyster sanctuary under the guidance of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR).  Our planting site is in the Bay just offshore from Chesapeake Beach; the specific location is known as Old Rock.

At this time we will be planting the oysters grown in the rectangular MGO cages (right). So we need all members with MGO cages to bring their oysters and cages to this event.  If you have MGO cages and are unable to bring them on Saturday, please let us know and we’ll try to make alternate delivery arrangements. (We will plant the oysters growing under the Railway boardwalk in the fall.)

Beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the boat ramps behind the Northeast Community Center we will place cages on a barge, navigate to the oyster bar and release oysters into bay. It should take one trip to get the job done. Afterwards the cages will be power washed and stored at Abner’s Marina until the fall delivery of new spat.

Come and lend a hand or simply join in the celebration of our first planting. We need your help in securing cages and placing them on a barge, releasing the yearlings onto the established oyster planting site and cleaning cages in preparation for our fall spat event. Bring suitable shoes for being on a barge, grab a pair of sturdy gloves and meet your fellow CBOCS colleagues.

For more information email Elizabeth Henderson (eahenderson@mac.com)
