CBOCS - Minutes etc.
CBOCS Introductory Meeting June 18, 2011 at Town Hall
We had three guest speakers: Len Zuza, Southern Maryland Oyster Cultivation Society (SMOCS); Jon Farrington, Johnny Oysterseed, Inc.; and Chris Judy, MD Department of Natural Resources (MDDNR) Marylanders Grow Oysters (MGO) program. Their talks informed us about the importance of oysters, equipment used to grow oysters, and some basics about their programs. We then used this information as a launching point to describe CBOCS, our program, in more depth since it is basically a hybrid of the MGO and SMOCS programs. We covered the material on the website and covered the annual oyster growing cycle.
Late August / Early September -- Spat and cages arrive. Need everyone's help to load oysters in cages and distribute to the Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail (boardwalk) and private piers.
November -- Need help winterizing Buoyant Oyster Cultivation Systems (BOCSs).
April -- De-winterize BOCSs.
June -- Plant Oysters on local reefs.
Besides growing oysters at your pier or along the boardwalk, we need help with the following tasks/committees (see Committees tab above). Let me know if you would like to serve on one of these committees. Boardwalk preparation and Water Sampling/ Monitoring need to be accomplished before the official opening ceremony for the Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail tentatively scheduled for late July. Once we get the list compiled for each committee we'll be contacting those individuals and help them get started.
