September 2012 Oyster Planting Scheduled

Dear CBOCS Members and Oyster Aficionados:

It's time to grab your gloves and join us for some fun on the water!  This September we have two oyster events planned (oyster planting & spat delivery). However they are on different weekends; so be sure to read this entire update and mark your calendars!

Looking forward to seeing you then!  CBOCS Steering Committee

Oyster Planting (September 8, 2012):  After a year of growing under the Railway Boardwalk Trail our yearling oysters are finally ready to take up residence in the Bay along side their siblings that we planted in the spring. However with approximately 90,000 oysters to transport to the "Old Rock" oyster sanctuary in the Bay, we have our work cut out for us and look forward to everyone's help!

Oyster planting will occur on Saturday, September 8.  Starting at 1 P.M. we will meet at Abner's Marina, behind Abner's Crab House, where we will remove the oysters from the Buoyant Oyster Cultivation Systems (BOCS). The oysters will then be placed in buckets and loaded on to a boat.  The boat will be navigated to the oyster sanctuary and the oysters released; it may take two or more trips.  The BOCSes will then be power washed in preparation for receiving new spat the following weekend.

Come and lend a hand or simply join in the celebration of our second planting.  We need your help with removing BOCSes from under boardwalk, emptying BOCSes, placing oysters in buckets, loading buckets of oysters on to a boat, releasing the yearlings onto the oyster reef and cleaning the BOCSes.

Spat Delivery & Deployment (September 15, 2012):  Now that all the 2011/2012 yearling oysters have been released it is time to raise some more! Come help us put spat in cages and install the BOCSes under the Railway Boardwalk Trail where the spat can grow undisturbed until next summer. Or if you raised spat at your pier last year, come pick up your MGO cages with fresh spat.

Spat (82 bags) will be delivered to the Public Ramp area behind the Northeast Community Center (NEW LOCATION).  We will need help tallying a sample of spat, filling the BOCS and MGO cages, distributing the MGO cages to participants, transporting BOCSes to boardwalk and installing them below the boardwalk.
